But don’t assume just because your furnace is running ok that your indoor air quality (IAQ) is satisfactory. IAQ is especially important in the winter months when we find ourselves spending more time indoors. To make sure your indoor air quality is at its highest level follow these tips.

 
Replace your HVAC filters: Different filter types are designed to be replaced at different intervals, so you should know what type of filter you use and mark your calendar when replacement is needed. If this is your first time changing your filters, check out this short “how to“.

 
Upgrade your filters: Standard fiberglass filters are acceptable for most applications, but if you’re concerned about IAQ, you might want to switch to filters with higher Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) ratings.

 
Consider a whole-home filtration system: If anyone in your home has severe allergies or respiratory problems, high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration systems are the gold standard for IAQ management. Whole-house air filters can also extend the life of your heating and cooling system with better overall performance.

 
Turn your thermostat to “fan on” mode: Most homeowners set their fan to “auto”, which means that the fan only runs when the HVAC system is actively heating or cooling. Switching the fan to “on” will use more energy, but the constant replacement of indoor air is a reliable way to boost IAQ.

 
Keep a clean home: Pet dander and every day dust can be extremely irritating. None of us like it, but dusting and running your vacuum every week can greatly improve your home’s IAQ.
