Being Prepared: Emergency Kits

Old Man Winter is officially here.

We want to make sure all of our customers are prepared in the event of a power outage or other emergency. Take a few minutes now and double check your emergency kit – are you ready?

  • Water – A family should have on hand, one gallon of water per person for a minimum of three days. Even though it may be cumbersome to store and carry, water is vital in an emergency.
  • Food – Non perishable, easy to prepare food items are the best options. Items such as granola bars and nuts make excellent choices. Don’t forget an inexpensive can opener.
  • First aid kit – Make sure you have bandages, sterilizing pads/iodine and gauze. It’s also not a bad idea to add some advil, aspirin, benadryl and tums. Also, your personal prescription medications should be included.
  • Flashlight and batteries – Be sure to store your spare batteries in a waterproof container.
  • Multi-purpose tool – You never know what you may have a need for.
  • Documents and personal information – Have copies of important family paperwork in your kit. Items such as birth certificates, deeds, insurance forms and medical records should be copied and secured.

We all hope this emergency kit is never needed. But it is always best to be prepared. If you want to learn more about emergency preparedness, visit the American Red Cross.
